Paying rent is a lot less fun than seeing the Broadway show of the same name. It’s that unrelenting monthly obligation that takes a huge bite from your hard-earned income. But hey, if you want a place to stay, you gotta pay.

Interestingly, residents of some states groan louder than others when the landlord comes knocking. According to data from statsamerica.org and worldpopulationreview.com, there are a handful of states in which renters give landlords nearly half of their yearly wage on average!

On the flipside, there are states where renters fork over just a quarter of their yearly wage (with one state clocking in at an average of 24%).
