Like it or not, everyone’s a critic in the social media age. Apparently, when you give humans the technology to broadcast their opinions to the world, they find it irresistible to speak their mind about…well, anything really.

Case in point: the Yelp platform.

While most social media posts don’t really do anything for society, Yelp serves a distinct purpose. As a platform for reviews and photos of local businesses, it helps online users make informed decisions about restaurants, hotels, shopping malls, and other establishments.

It’s fun to share your first-hand experiences on Yelp. It’s probably even more fulfilling to secure a steady source of income from Yelp.

How can this happen? Well, Yelp is hiring, and it’s got a bunch of remote jobs waiting for you.

More on Yelp

It’s pretty remarkable that Yelp is offering work-from-home positions in the 21st century. Back in the early 2000s, co-founder Jeremy Stoppelman was just looking for a doctor to treat his flu.

To the chagrin of the Harvard Business School student, he found it quite difficult to source this kind of information from the internet. “It was frustrating,” Stoppelman told The Wall Street Journal in 2012. “We realized the best way to find a doctor, or other services, was by word of mouth.”

So, in 2004, Stoppelman and his business partner Russel Simmons co-founded Yelp to amplify the power of consumer feedback. In its early incarnation, Yelp facilitated email exchanges between people looking for services and people who could recommend services.

A year later, Yelp was revamped into a platform for reviews of local businesses. This would become the site’s identity in the years that followed, and to the delight of Stoppelman and Simmons, the new-look Yelp would win over investors and online users alike. By 2006, investors had pumped a total of $16 million into the venture, which was already boasting 1 million users on a monthly basis.

In March 2012, Yelp became a publicly traded company on the New York Stock Exchange. For the rest of the decade, its annual net revenue continued to trend upward, hitting the billion-dollar mark in 2019.

At present, Yelp accommodates reviews for hotels and dining establishments; salons and spas, shopping outlets; real estate; schools; public services; and a host of other niches.

Of course, there are reviews of healthcare institutions. That way, online users can get treatment for their flu and go on to do awesome things—much like Stoppelman did when he co-founded Yelp.
